SHANGHAI, China – Three USA archers were among the top 12 compound men separated by just six points as competition kicked off on Tuesday at the start of the 2024 Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 1.
The best of the bunch was Kris Schaff, whose score of 712 was good enough for fifth (level with fourth) and just two behind top seed Mathias Fullerton (DEN). To emphasize how tight it all was, Nick Kappers (10th) was one of four archers to shoot 709, with Sawyer Sullivan one point behind and seeded 12th. Angus Moss came in at 31 after firing 703.
Eliminations begin on Thursday. Moss faces Michea Godano (ITA) in the 1/32 round. Victory would set him against second seed Kim Jongho (KOR). Sullivan starts against Yagiz Sezgin (TUR), Kappers faces Ajay Scott (GBR) and Schaff meets Stef Willems (NED).
Before that, the team elimination matches take place on Wednesday. The compound men’s team of Schaff, Kappers and Sullivan are seeded number two and start against Italy. The compound women start as fourth seeds and have a bye to the quarterfinals where Olivia Dean, Alexis Ruiz and Carson Krahe – the Pan American Championship gold medalists – will tackle Estonia.
Dean (pictured) and Ruiz both shot scores of 703 during qualification in the compound women, which was good enough for 10th and 12th respectively. Krahe was eight points back and is seeded 26th, while Cassidy Cox is 36th after a 686.
Cox begins eliminations on Thursday at the 1/32 stage, against Aizhan Seidakhmetova (KAZ). Krahe also tackles a Kazakh archer in the form of Elmira Raissova, while Ruiz and Dean have byes to the 1/16 round. Ruiz will face either Adel Zhexenbinova (KAZ) or Georgina Graham (AUS), with Dean awaiting the winner of Avneet Kaur (IND) against Andrea Robles (PHI).
Compound mixed team eliminations are to be held on Friday. The USA pairing of Dean and Schaff are seeded fourth and begin against Singapore in the 1/8th round.
Qualification in the recurve division gets underway on Wednesday. The four women include Casey Kaufhold, Catalina GNoriega, Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez and Molly Nugent. The men’s quartet is made up of Brady Ellison, Jack Williams, Jackson Mirich and Gabe Anderson.
