SÃO PAULO, Brazil – Six archers are in South America this week for the 2024 Para Pan American Championships, competing in compound men open, recurve women open, W1 men and W1 women.
Jason Tabansky returns to defend the title he won in Santiago, Chile two years ago in the W1 men. He can expect tough competition from Helcio Luiz Jaime Gomes Perilo and Eugenio Santana Franco, the silver and bronze medalists from 2022, who will enjoy the added benefit of having the home crowd behind them.
Tabansky won in dramatic fashion two years ago, trailing by seven heading into the final end, he edged the Brazilian by one point, 124-123, helped by four consecutive maximums!
Flying the US flag in the W1 women will be Paralympic Games hopeful Tracy Otto. The since-retired Lisa Coryell won gold in the same category last time around.
Douglas Godfrey of the USA topped the podium in the compound men open two years ago. The archers pushing for glory this week in that division are Robert Griffith and Nicholas Peacock.
Candice Caesar claimed bronze at the 2022 edition in Santiago, and will look to improve on that in the recurve women open division alongside teammate Karen Sternfeld.
Official practice takes place on Tuesday, with qualification starting on Wednesday. The 2024 Para Pan American Championships run until Saturday.
