PHOENIX, Ariz. – Around 200 of the country’s top young talent will be gathered at the Ben Avery Archery Range just north of Phoenix on Wednesday to try and secure a spot on the USA team for the World Archery Youth Championships.
The World Archery Youth Championships, involving Under-18 and Under-21 categories, take place from July 1-9 in Limerick, Ireland, and will involve more than 60 nations. The archers will contest individual, team and mixed team competitions, in recurve and compound.
With temperatures on Wednesday expected to be hovering around 100 degrees, archers in Arizona will begin with a single 72-arrow round, after which each category will be cut to the top eight. There will be round robin matches after lunch, from which the USA team will be selected.
Rod Menzer is the CEO of USA Archery. He said, “USA Archery has a rich history of success at the World Archery Youth Championships and we’re looking forward to continuing that tradition this year.
“We’ve got a huge field of incredible talents out here for the Trials. Scores will be contentious, and we will be cheering for all our young archers as we see who rises to the top of the leaderboards.”
Among those hoping to be heading to Ireland in the summer are Casey Kaufhold and Isaac Sullivan, winners at last month’s Indoor Nationals Final in recurve and compound respectively.
The World Archery Youth Championships Team Trials will be followed by the Arizona Cup, which gets underway at the same venue on Friday, and goes through Sunday. The Arizona Cup is the first event in the United States Archery Team (USAT) Qualifier Series.
