ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Five divisions will play to a finish on Sunday to determine the remaining medalists for the 2024 WIAWIS USA Archery JOAD U.S. Open after thunderstorms forced an early end to proceedings on Saturday afternoon.
Those resuming on Sunday morning will be recurve U13, U15, U18 and U21 women, and compound U18 men. The JOAD U.S. Open will be followed by team rounds.
Before the rains came, Olivia Dean, Francesca Benavidez, Chanyoung Mun, Abigail Winterton, Kevan Pollei, Mason Loofboro, Ethan Mitchell, Ava Jones, Noah Graham, Jayden Azbill and Chase Manor all completed the double, adding JOAD U.S. Open gold to the gold they won at JOAD Target Nationals on Friday.
Elsewhere, brothers Cody and David Fightmaster both podiumed in fixed pins. David won silver in the U18 men’s division, as did older brother Cody at U21.
The day began brightly with news that the WIAWIS USA Archery JOAD Target Nationals & JOAD U.S. Open will return to Balloon Fiesta Park in 2025. The 2025 edition will take place July 16-20.
In the matches to be completed, top seed Eunice Choi trails Laurel Anderson 4-2 in the recurve U21 women’s gold medal contest. Both medal matches are locked at 3-3 in the recurve U18 women. Ye-eun Whang, the number one seed, is involved in the gold medal match.
The recurve U15 women medal matches are yet to get started. The recurve U13 women are still at the semifinal stage. Dewey Hathaway will be eager to add the JOAD U.S. Open to his victory in the JOAD Target Nationals when he faces Jacob Merkel on Sunday. Their match is yet to get underway.
