SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - USA archers shined on qualification day shooting on home soil for the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup. The winds were crazy strong all day, and strength and experience prevailed on the target.
Kris Schaff topped the compound men's bracket with a 699. "I handled the wind pretty well, it was tricky at points, but there were lulls where it was steady and I tried to keep all my arrows in those windows and then never make a dumb shot," commented Schaff. With a 695, Reo Wilde qualified second and Steve Anderson and Braden Gellenthien rounded out the group in 6th and 10th with 690 and 686 and earned a team ranking of 1st, 34 points clear the rest of the field.
The recurve teams also battled the wind well, with Brady Ellison qualifying 3rd for the men with a 663. Just behind Jack Williams ranked 9th and Matt Requa was 23rd for a team rank of 2nd behind Malaysia.
Mackenzie Brown led the U.S. women's squad, qualifying 5th with a 629. Khatuna Lorig and Erin Mickelberry's 13 and 29th place finishes put the team in 5th. Brown and Ellison's combined score seeds them 2nd headed into the mixed team event.
"The competition was really challenging I feel like the stronger athletes really would push out to the front, so the people who are really mentally and physically strong and really secure in what they're shooting. The scores were a lot lower than what you're used to seeing at a World Cup."
Tom Stanwood finished 32nd for the men and Utah native LaNola Shepherd came in 36th on the women's field.
Jamie Van Natta was the U.S. standout in incredibly challenging winds ranking 9th with a 661. Lexi Keller and Christie Collin finished just points apart to qualify 22nd and 23rd with Robyn Repp 26th. The team qualified 4th and Van Natta and Schaff will enter the mixed team event ranked 3rd.
Early elimination matches through this Thursday are free and open to the public to attend. June 23-24 will host the exciting head to head finals matches and a huge Archery Festival for spectators. Attendees will have the opportunity to try their hand at archery, play games, win prizes, taste local flavor at on-site food trucks and more!
Tickets are now available athttp://archeryworldcupsaltlake.org. Tickets are $10 pp/session, and children ages 8 and under enter free. For fans watching from home, the finals will be streamed live on the Olympic Channel.
