USA Archery Board Approves Separating Olympic Round Ties for USAT Rankings

The USA Archery Board of Directors unanimously approved a motion to clarify how ties in the final event placing will be handled for USAT rankings.  It was determined that ties will be broken based on the archer's single arrow average for the match in which they were eliminated.  This is effective for elimination in the 1/8 round and earlier. This process will be used for USAT ranking points only, not for final placement at USAT events.  Final and overall event placement will continue to follow FITA rules.

2010 FITA Rules for Olympic Round Placement

Under 2010 FITA by-laws archers eliminated during the Olympic Rounds are placed as follows:

  • 1/8 Round - All ranked 9th
  • 1/16 Round - All ranked 17th
  • 1/32 Round - All ranked 33rd

The new FITA rules maintain Olympic Round ties for those eliminated prior to the 1/8 round.

The Athlete Advisory Committee voiced their concern to the Board asking for the 2010 USAT Rankings to be amended to give proper ranking to the archers eliminated prior to the 1/8 round.  The AAC felt that keeping the Olympic Round ties in accordance to FITA By-Laws would not properly rank archers for the 2010 USAT Rankings.

Approved Amendments to 2010 USAT Rankings

USA Archery staff and the AAC worked in conjunction to develop the amendments to the 2010 USAT Rankings.  It was decided to rank the archers by the single-arrow average (SAA) to calculate the overall 2010 USAT Rankings.  The archer's SAA is found by dividing the total match points by the number of arrows shot during that match.  Archers will be ranked by their SAA against archers who were also eliminated during that same round.  If one or more archers have the same SAA from the round they were eliminated, the tie will not be broken.

The purpose of the amended USAT ranking system is to provide archers the best opportunity to receive proper placement and point separation during a competition.  This amendment now allows archers to receive a numerical ranking when eliminated during the Olympic Round, as opposed to the new FITA rules.

It was of necessity to make this change retroactive to Jan. 1, 2010, which includes the 2010 events: Arizona Cup, Texas Shootout and Gold Cup.  The 2011 USAT Rankings are updated using the new formula, and are available by clicking here (http://usarchery.org/program/usat-and-jr-usat).
