BERLIN, Germany - Competition at the 2018 Archery World Cup stage 4 in Berlin was incredibly windy today. Archers competed in early individual elimination matches and the first round of team rounds with USA fighting through tough matches and shooting conditions.
Brady Ellison explained: "In Salt Lake the wind was blowing harder, but generally you knew about where your arrows were going. On this field, we saw it with the scores yesterday, everybody missed something. There was a wind on the field that no one could see and everyone came off the line frustrated. It didn't seem to make sense. Even today in the matches when it was blowing a little bit harder, you're starting to get a feel for it and you step up to the line and start shooting the other way. There's something here that everyone is missing and whoever figures it out first is going to do well."
Despite the wind, 16th seed Ellison opened his first match with sets of 30, 29 and 29 for a 4-2 lead, and then a 27 was enough to beat Adriaensen of Belgium's 23 to advance. Teammates Jack Williams, ranked 48th, also took a 6-2 win, and 47th seed Alex Bourdage took a 7-1 decision. 90th seed Matt Requa fought hard against Spain's Alvarino Garcia, putting 4 points on the board before Alvarino Garcia earned 6 and ended his run.
In the second round, Ellison's scores dropped to 27s and 28s, but it was enough to win 7-1 and stay in the game. Williams had an incredible upset of 17th seed Chirault of France, forcing a shoot off and winning. Bourdage fell 6-4 to Australian Olympic Medalist Ryan Tyack.
Mackenzie Brown was the only U.S. recurve woman to survive today's matches. Brown and Khatuna Lorig had byes into the second round, where 16th seed Lorig was upset 6-2 by 64th ranked Lopez Sanchis of Spain. Brown took a 7-3 victory with some strong scores in the tricky winds. Erin Mickelberry passed the first round before a 6-2 exit in the second, and Amy Jung made a 6-4 run in the first round against Germany's Kroppen.
On the compound field, only Robyn Repp and Reo Wilde had matches in the first round. Both scored 138s, which gave Robyn an 8-point victory. Wilde's forced a shoot off where he drilled an X to win. Round two, Wilde stepped it up with a 145 solid win along with teammate Steve Anderson's 146-142 success. Braden Gellenthien lost a shoot off against Kazakhstan's Fisher after matching with 144s. Gellenthien's points coming into the event are enough to put him in for the World Cup Final in Samsun, Turkey this fall, despite the early exit in Berlin. Kris Schaff, who is currently 4th in the rankings, qualified 2nd in Berlin and has a bye into tomorrow's matches.
Repp did not pass the second round with a 135-139 score, but teammates Lexi Keller and Jamie Van Natta posted 142-136 and 141-132 winning scores respectively. Keller's win was an upset of 31st seed Lyan of Kazakhstan to make it to the 1/16th round where USA's Paige Pearce will enter the matches after a bye from her 8th place seed.
All four U.S. teams were ranked high enough to earn a bye into the 1/8th round. Competition resumes tomorrow with individual and team elimination matches through the semifinals, and the first round of mixed team elimination matches.
