NEWBERRY, Florida - The 2018 Easton Foundations' Gator Cup opened this morning at the Easton Newberry Archery Center. The second stop on this year's USAT series, competition is heating up, and here is what you need to know!
Record Participation: Over 500 archers are competing at the Gator Cup this weekend in record shattering numbers as the USAT series continues to grow. Tournament Director Eric Blalock commented: "On behalf of the Easton Foundations Staff and volunteers we welcome you to the 9th annual Easton Foundations Gator Cup�Your support helps our programs to further the Easton Foundations' mission; of furthering the sport of archery by bridging the gap between first experience and elite experience."
Weather: This weekend promises to be HOT! With temperatures already over 90 degrees today, pro archer Crystal Gauvin shared top tips for staying cool while shooting in the blazing sun on her blog this week. It's a highly recommended read you can check out here. Paige Gore commented that despite the heat, it's likely the best weather at a Gator Cup yet with near perfect shooting conditions.
New Format: USA Archery announced earlier this year that we are experimenting with different formats for the USAT series this year. For the Gator Cup, recurve men and compound women qualified today and will shoot eliminations tomorrow morning, and then the recurve women and compound men will begin their competition tomorrow afternoon and conclude Sunday morning.
History: The Gator Cup has been a staple on the USAT circuit since it was first introduced in 2010. Brady Ellison has won all but two editions of the event so far, while Reo Wilde has four titles to his name and Khatuna Lorig has three to hers. 2017 was the first year the masters division had their own competition bracket and new this year, juniors are pulled out from seniors in their own division as well.
