COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Ready to try a national tournament, but not quite ready to leave home? That's okay. The winners of the USA Archery Mail-In Tournament for the first quarter of 2014 shot their scores from the comfort of a local archery range, and staying close to home was no bar to posting nationally competitive results. The event marked USA Archery's largest first quarter event ever, with 312 participants, 22 teams and 37 clubs. Why the jump in participation? Archery interest has surged over the past two years thanks to movies like "The Hunger Games" and "Brave."
USA Archery - which selects and trains teams for the Olympic and Paralympic Games - has answered that increase in archery interest with new programs and initiatives to help those interested in archery to get involved in the sport.
The next Mail-In Tournament has already begun, but there's still plenty of time to enter. The 2nd Quarter Outdoor Mail-In started on April 15, and runs through June 30, and gives archers a chance to show off their archery skills using an outdoor format.
