USAT Qualifier Series seeks to end on a high as quality field assembled for the Buckeye Classic

DUBLIN, Ohio – The fourth and final United States Archery Team (USAT) Series Qualifier event of the year, the Buckeye Classic, begins on Friday at the Darree Soccer Fields just north of Columbus.

Almost 750 archers will be competing, from U18, U21, seniors and masters (50+), with Kevin Mather among them. Mather, the Paralympic champion from the Tokyo Games two years ago, claimed gold on Sunday in the recurve men open category at the World Archery Para Championships in Pilsen, Czech Republic.

Also set to feature is Sydney Sullenberger, who won gold in the compound U21 women at the World Archery Youth Championships in Limerick, Ireland earlier this month. Sullenberger also won bronze in Ireland in the compound women's team event, alongside Carson Krahe and Makenna Proctor. The Buckeye Classic is Proctor's local event.

Others to medal at the World Youth Championships appearing in Dublin include Isaac Sullivan, Leann Drake, Christian Stoddard, Gabrielle Sasai, Landyn Cox and Grady Kane.

Another archer out of Ohio arrives with something of a reputation. Jacob Wukie is an Olympic silver medalist, which he won with Brady Ellison and Jake Kaminski at the 2012 Games in London.

There are world class compound archers competing, in the form of Braden and Tanja Gellenthien, Paige Pearce, James Lutz and Danelle Wentzel-Lutz. Wentzel-Lutz was part of the gold medal-winning compound women's team from the World Cup Stage 1 in Turkey in April. Her teammates from that win, Cassidy Cox and Madison Cox, are also in Ohio this weekend.

Three USAT events have gone before in 2023. Those are Arizona Cup, Gator Cup and SoCal Showdown. Among the winners from SoCal in attendance at the Buckeye Classic are Kenneth Brunko (compound 50+ men), Jason Wright (barebow 50+ men), Lisa Sullivan (barebow 50+ women), Susan Bock (recurve 50+ women), Jayden Azbill (fixed pins U18 women), Andrew Van Why (barebow U21 men) and Bella Otter (compound U21 women).

The Buckeye Classic begins with a 72-arrow qualification round, followed on day two by elimination round match play for the top 64 archers in each category (division and discipline).

There will be barebow, compound, fixed pins, recurve, para compound, para recurve, para V.I. and para W1 disciplines. USA Archery will live stream the senior gold medal matches across barebow, compound and recurve on Sunday afternoon, from 2pm ET.
