SHANGHAI, China – Compound archers Nick Kappers and Alexis Ruiz fought their way through to the semifinals of the individual events at the Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 1, which will take place on Saturday.
Ruiz, a triple gold medalist at the Pan American Championships in Colombia earlier this month, defeated world number one Ella Gibson (GBR) on her way to the last four. She also beat Dafne Quintero (MEX), 149-144, the archer she overcame to win one of her three golds in Medellin.
In the semifinals, Ruiz will meet another Mexican in the shape of top seed Andrea Becerra. Kappers faces Priyansh (IND) in his semifinal. In his 1/8th round match against Andrey Tyutyun (KAZ), Kappers fired in a 150 to defeat the seventh seed.
Earlier, Angus Moss was knocked out by a maximum, losing 150-146 to Michea Godano (ITA). Sawyer Sullivan won through his first match via a shootoff before losing out to Jean Pizarro (PUR), who then lost to Kris Schaff. Schaff fell at the quarterfinal stage, losing 148-147 to Yang Jaewon (KOR).
On the women’s side, Carson Krahe came through her opening match against Elmira Raissova (KAZ) but lost out to the seventh seeded Hazal Burun (TUR) in the 1/16 round, the same stage at which Olivia Dean narrowly went out to Avneet Kaur (IND). Cassidy Cox fell to Aizhan Seidakhmetova (KAZ).
In the team events, the compound women of Dean, Krahe and Ruiz finished fifth, while compound men and the two recurve teams each finished sixth.
Mixed team competition starts on Friday. In recurve, Brady Ellison and Casey Kaufhold, the sixth seeds, have a bye to the 1/8th round where they await the winners of Spain versus Israel. The compound pairing of Dean and Schaff are seeded fourth and begin against Singapore, also in the 1/8th round.
Recurve elimination takes place on Friday. Teammates Kaufhold and Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez meet each other first up, while Catalina GNoriega takes on Elia Canales (ESP).
Ellison will begin the elimination rounds against Roy Dror (ISR), Gabe Anderson faces second seed Matias Grande (MEX), while Jack Williams meets Pravin Ramesh Jadhav (IND) and Jackson Mirich takes on Jeff Henckels (LUX).
