MEDELLIN, Colombia – Alexis Ruiz was the golden girl at the Pan American Championships, capturing an astonishing three gold medals in the compound division on Saturday.
She began with success alongside Olivia Dean and Carson Krahe in the women’s team event, then joined forces with Isaac Sullivan to triumph in the mixed team, before going it alone to claim individual gold to cap a sensational day.
The gold rush got going with a 234-228 victory over El Salvador. Ruiz was part of a strong trio that included Texas A&M’s compound women team captain Krahe and Arizona Cup champion Dean.
Ruiz and Sullivan then toppled hosts Colombia, edging Sebastian Arenas and Sara Lopez 155-154. That match was level heading into the final end, before Ruiz and Sullivan totaled 39, while Arenas and Lopez could only manage 38.
The individual glory came with victory over the compound women’s top seed, Dafne Quintero (MEX). With her competitive juices flowing after the previous gold medal matches, Ruiz had a two point lead heading into the final end, and held on for a 146-145 win.
Competition concludes on Sunday with the USA involved in five medal matches. First up will be Catalina GNoriega, Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez and Casey Kaufhold going for gold in the recurve women’s team category. They take on Mexico.
That is immediately followed by the bronze medal match in the recurve men, and another meeting between the USA and Mexico. The US team consists of Gabe Anderson, Brady Ellison and Jack Williams.
Individual medal matches take center stage in the afternoon, starting with Kaufhold versus Alejandra Valencia (MEX) in recurve women’s gold medal encounter.
Williams competes in the men’s bronze medal match against Hugo Franco (CUB), before Jackson Mirich will seek to overcome Matias Grande (MEX) and bring home another Pan American gold medal, having claimed gold from last year’s Pan Am Games in Chile.
