LIMERICK, Ireland – Battling torrential rain and driving wind, all four of the USA’s compound teams won a medal on day three of the World Archery Youth Championships.
The U18 women, consisting of Liko Arreola, Olivia Dean and Leann Drake, claimed silver. Dean was denied her second gold of the event, having taken first in the compound U18 mixed team event on Wednesday, with India taking top honors 214-212.
That was followed by the U18 men and both teams in the U21 division winning bronze, with conditions getting progressively worse as the afternoon wore on. The U18 men of Landyn Cox, Dewey Hathaway and Grady Kane proved too strong for Italy. Quality aside, their demeanor gave the air of three close friends enjoying their archery.
The U21 women then stepped up and saw off France 219-200. The joy shown by Carson Krahe, Makenna Proctor and Sydney Sullenberger was palatable, with the final arrow triggering huge smiles, high fives, and warm embraces.
Isaac Sullivan, Sawyer Sullivan and Nathan Wilken – urged on by teammates soaked to the skin yet shouting wildly through an Irish summer downpour – completed a fine day’s work for Team USA as they triumphed 229-216 over India.
Thursday’s haul brings the USA’s total tally to date to six medals, after a gold and silver were won on Wednesday. Hopes are high for that number to climb on Friday when the recurve teams take center stage.
