YANKTON, SD – A cold front gripped the 2022 World Archery Field Championships as the team and individual eliminations continued.
After a long day of eliminations yesterday, Matthew Nofel was slated to face Brady Ellison, who was already pre-seeded, in the semifinals. Nofel embraced the cold to triumph over his teammate 65-59, advancing him to the gold medal finals against Florian Unruh of Germany on Sunday. Ellison will line up with Patrick Huston from Great Britain in the bronze medal match.
Dave Cousins bested the world’s number-one-ranked compound male, Mike Schloesser. Cousins shot an impressive, near-perfect match dropping only a single point for the win 71-68. Cousins will meet Nico Wiener of Austria in the finals contesting for the gold medal.
Paige Pearce took down the top female compound archer in the world, Ella Gibson, in the semifinals. Pearce scored a 66 to Gibson’s 64, leading through the entirety of her match. Pearce will face a familiar opponent, Toja Ellison, in the finals.
After seeding third in the qualification rounds, Tate Morgan’s run at the Championship title came to an end today. A single point separated Morgan and Alexander Kullberg of Sweden, who took the win 102-101.
Fawn Girard, the last barebow archer standing, will be fighting for bronze against Japan’s Megumi Masaki. Girard confronted Spain’s Rosa Minyano Miquel to win 73-69. However, a single point in Girard’s second match of the day knocked her out of the gold medal finals.
The team’s youth archers wrapped up their competition today accumulating three medals.
Shooting in the compound under-21 women’s division, Lilie Aguilar held fast in her top-ranked position from qualifications. Aguilar had to face teammate Gracelyn Chambers in the semifinals where Aguilar took the win 65-62. The top seed progressed to the gold medal match where she challenged Andreea Albu of Romania. The young U.S. archer took the match 64-62. Chambers went on to finish fourth.
Rubie Chambers took home the barebow under-21 women’s gold. Chambers faced Elena Toplicenau in the finals to claim the win 32-31.
Also shooting barebow under-21, Max Rossiter earned silver.
The team competition got underway this morning deciding which athletes would be headed to the finals and who would be heading home.
Paige Pearce and Dave Cousins are going all the way to the compound mixed team gold medal match. The top-ranked duo defeated Amanda Mlinaric and Domagoj Buden in a semifinals shootout. Two perfect arrows earned broke the tie and cemented the U.S. team’s spot in the finals.
The barebow mixed team, recurve mixed team, and men’s team will all be competing in Saturday’s bronze medal matches.
Four of Team USA Archery’s youth teams swept silver medal placements including the barebow under-21 mixed team, compound under-21 mixed team, women’s under-21 mixed team, and men’s under-21 mixed team.
