NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Muskingum University is in the process of building a new Varsity Archery Team to join USA Archery’s Collegiate Archery Program. Muskingum University is a Division III member of the NCAA in Southeast Ohio, an area where archery is quite popular, especially at the high school level.
Muskingum University’s Vice President and Director of Athletics Steve Brockelbank is excited about catering collegiate competition to passionate archers: “One thing we’ve always talked about as an institution is being of value to our local community and to our region, and this gave us an opportunity to provide a chance for young archers to continue competing at the collegiate level and to be a benefit to citizens of the community.”
Brockelbank added: “Our school president was thrilled to add the archery team and we’ve gotten a ton of support from the community. I know it’s a growing sport, but I think our area is unique with a lot of interest. There are a few club programs in the state of Ohio, but not a lot of varsity programs and we thought this would be a great chance to provide a varsity-level experience, to be part of an athletic department for archers in the area.”
Muskingum University is easily able to incorporate an archery program into their existing campus facilities. Between an indoor gym and plenty of outdoor recreation space available, archers will be able to practice on campus and compete year-round.
The team will offer scholarships to recruit top talent, particularly from USA Archery’s Junior Olympic Archery Development Program and National Championships as they hope to grow a team of at least 30 archers to compete at the national level.
Brockelbank shared: “Right now our first goal is to get a coach. So much success is coach driven, so finding the right person to lead the program is critical for both recruitment, retention, and of course coaching the way they need to be coached. With the right coach, this program could really take off.” Learn more about the coach position and apply here.
