COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – With the last of the 14 Indoor Nationals events completed last weekend, ending two months of drama across the country involving thousands of archers, we have the names of National Indoor and JOAD Indoor National champions.
From U13 to 70+, across barebow, compound, recurve and fixed pins - with almost 3,800 athletes competing - it has been a busy few weeks, with the usual high scores and close contests. In particular, the compound men’s division was incredibly tight, as just one point separated the top four archers. Dave Cousins was crowned National Indoor champion with a score of 1188, closely followed by Carson Sapp, Parker Baker and Sawyer Sullivan (all 1187).
Casey Kaufhold took the honors in the recurve women’s division, shooting 1170. She was ahead of fellow Olympic hopefuls Catalina GNoriega and Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez.
One point split Kyle Coffey (1097) and Brian Way in the barebow men, while Alexis Ruiz and Liko Arreola finished joint second in the compound women. Paige Pearce was named National Indoor champion in that division.
Brady Ellison left it late to claim the national title. He was involved at the Utah event last weekend and it was worth the wait as he scored 1190 points, which was 15 better than his nearest rival, Jack Williams. Ellison began with 295 in the first round, but upped his game to then go 299, 298, 298. Fawn Girard took the barebow women’s title, ahead of 2023 Arizona Cup winner Johana Czako.
Texas A&M dominated the recurve division in the Collegiate National Indoor category, finishing first and second in both the men and women. Trenton Cowles and Riley Marx won, ahead of teammates Alex Gilliam and Laurel Anderson respectively.
Other collegiate winners included Austin Taylor (Lindsey Wilson College, compound men), Samantha Roberts (William Carey University, compound women), Kyle Coffey (Union College, barebow men), Maggie Brensinger (University of Pikeville, barebow women), Connor Mullis (University of the Cumberlands, fixed pins men) and Sophia Hunziger (Lindsey Wilson College, fixed pins women).
Veteran archer Mark Hainline was crowed 50+ National Indoor champion in the recurve men division, just ahead of four-time Paralympian Eric Bennett. Wendy Gardner, meanwhile, set new national records in the para compound women open, in both the 18m Indoor Round and Double Round. Jordan White did the same in the para recurve men open (U18 & U21), setting two national bests.
National Indoor champions were also crowned in the traditional and longbow disciplines. The winners were Michael Davenport (traditional men), Tracey Francis (traditional women), Kieth Harnish (longbow men) and Stacey Carmichael (longbow women).
Running parallel to the Indoor Nationals events were JOAD Indoor Nationals, involving barebow, compound, fixed pins, recurve and recurve open (para) from U13 to U21. In all, there were just under 1,600 involved.
There were familiar faces atop the respective leaderboards, including Casey Kaufhold (recurve U21 women) and Isabella Kim (recurve U18 women). In the compound U21 men, Isaac and Sawyer Sullivan (no relation) finished joint first with 598 points in a two round format. It was the same in the compound U21 women, as Leann Drake and Nicole Morris both shot 577 for the joint top score.
Dewey Hathaway (595), a double gold medalist at last year’s World Archery Youth Championship in Ireland, edged out Caleb Quiocho and Grady Kane by one point in the compound U18 men. Kane’s first round of arrows produced 299 points. Liko Arreola scored the same as Hathaway in the compound U18 women’s division, finishing three points clear of Savannah O’Donohue.
