SHANGHAI, China – USA archers will be pushing for honors on Saturday in the compound division at the Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 1, with mixed team and individual medals up for grabs.
Olivia Dean and Kris Schaff will face the Mexico pairing of Andrea Becerra and Lot Maximo Méndez Ortiz in a battle for the compound mixed team bronze medal. Nick Kappers plays Priyansh (IND) in the semifinals of the compound men, with in-form Alexis Ruiz facing Becerra in the last four of compound women.
Dean and Schaff navigated their passage to the bronze medal match on Friday with wins over Singapore and Turkey. They narrowly lost 152-150 to Estonia in the semifinals, setting up a Saturday meeting with Mexico.
Qualification and elimination matches took place inside the Yuanshen Stadium. For the finals, it means a move to a brand-new venue in the financial area of Pudong close to the Huangpu River, the Pudong Riverside Financial Plaza.
Elimination matches took place on Friday in recurve. Jack Williams finished fifth after pushing top seed Kim Woojin all the way in their quarterfinal match, losing in a shootoff. Casey Kaufhold came in sixth in the recurve women. Earlier, she had to come from 4-0 down against teammate Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez to get through her opening match of eliminations, eventually winning 6-4.
This is the first of three World Cup stages, reduced from the usual four due to this being an Olympic year. The remaining World Cup schedule looks like this:
