There was a USA double, as Braden GELLENTHIEN and Jamie VAN NATTA both struck gold at the International Face 2 Face tournament in Telford, England from 2-3 December 2011.
GELLENTHIEN defeated Frenchman Pierre Julien DELOCHE in the compound men's final after two days of top class shooting at the International Centre. The American fought back from losing the first set to overcome DELOCHE. He immediately levelled the match, and after the two archers went toe to toe in the next two sets, GELLENTHIEN then shot a perfect 10-10-10 in the fifth to take the title.
Both semifinals were decided by a one-arrow shoot-off, with GELLENTHIEN defeating Martin DAMSBO of Denmark, and DELOCHE of France doing likewise against Italy's Sergio PAGNI, who went on to win the bronze medal.
In the women's event, VAN NATTA had to fight off a determined challenge in the final from Naomi JONES (GBR). There was only a point in it as VAN NATTA took the first two sets, but JONES battled back to take the third. The local then matched her illustrious opponent 10 for 10 as maximum scores by both archers took it into a fifth set. But three more 10s from the American secured her the gold medal.
In the recurve women's tournament, Denmark's Louise LAURSEN took the gold medal, defeating home favourite Charlotte BURGESS. The British archer twice led LAURSEN, before losing the match with a last arrow 7 to hand her opponent the gold medal. GB junior Becky MARTIN, 16, took the bronze medal.
On the men's side Britain's Larry GODFREY was in fantastic form as he won the recurve men recurve gold medal. He headed at British 1-2-3, with Alan WILLS taking silver, and Michael PEART the bronze. But it was GODFREY's form that had a packed crowd roaring its approval in the final, as he proved too good for WILLS with eight 10s and a 9 from his nine arrows.
