MEDELLIN, Colombia - The U.S. archers continued to prove their strength in team competition today as the compound teams both qualified first and pre-seeded into the semifinals and all four teams earned spots in the finals.
The recurve men had the longest path to gold, starting in the 1/8th elimination. Brady Ellison led Collin Klimitchek and Daniel McLaughlin to take the match in just three sets. Splitting the first three arrows with Suitzerland, the trio picked up and finished out 5-1 to advance.
The quarterfinals posed a greater challenge as a tough team from India posted high scores to the USA's 55, 56, 55 and 55 but Team USA took the win 5-3 before breezing through the semifinals against Colombia.
The recurve women, Mackenzie Brown, Khatuna Lorig and Ariel Gibilaro came in during the quarterfinals and made a splash with a quick 6-0 shutout over higher-seeded Japan. Then in the semifinals against Korea the tables turned and the U.S. archers fell 6-0 but will shoot for bronze in the finals tomorrow.
The compound men and women both qualified first and pre-seeded into the semifinals. With just one match to determine which medal they would shoot for, Reo Wilde must have had an extra push. Having made it to the bronze final both individually and for the mixed team with Lexi Keller earned a shot at gold on Sunday as well.
Opening with a perfect 60, Wilde, Steve Anderson and Braden Gellenthien were unstoppable. Winning by a solid 5-point margin the powerhouse team will continue to face Italy for gold.
Lexi Keller, Paige Pearce, and Danielle Reynolds formed a young but experienced compound women's team. An unfortunate arrow in the second end put the team down 6 points behind Italy, a deficit they were unable to make up. However, this shot at bronze means Team USA will compete in every event at the compound finals this Sunday.
