CHULA VISTA, Calif. - This past weekend, competition was fierce at the US Team Trials for World Archery Para Championships. The nation's top para archers gathered at the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista to compete for slots on the team headed to Bangkok, Thailand in November.
Following a heated qualification round, the top eight archers in each category advanced to round robin match play to determine the top three archers.
The open men's compound bracket was cutthroat, and after a double 50m round, Dugie Denton was in first with an outstanding 1350, a single point ahead of Jeff Sena and with Jonathan Mize just behind. In the end Jeff Sena, Lance Thornton and Dugie Denton prevailed and made the cut for Thailand.
In the W1 men's compound category, Jeff Fabry ranked first ahead of Chuck Lear and Jerry Shields. The qualification rankings held through the round robin matches and this strong trio will join the standing recurve men's top finishers: Michael Lukow, Tim Palumbo and Ed Patton. The highest qualifiers from the W2 men's recurve division were Russell Wolfe and TJ Pemberton.
The competition in the open women's compound division also saw some close battles. Representing the US in Bangkok will be Ashlee Sheppard, D'arce Hess and Martha Chavez, who both qualified highest and kept the highest three rankings after match play. The US standing recurve women will be well represented by Natalie Wells, Kinga Kiss-Johnson and Lee Ford.
