Guadalajara, Mexico - Team USA came out swinging in the first round of competition at the Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
USA's Matthew Stutzman qualified first in the men's compound open event, shooting a 1359. He was followed by teammates Dugan Denton with a 1346, and Jonathan Mize, shooting a 1329. In the men's recurve W2/standing category, the group was led by Luciano Rezende (BRA) with 1180, Jose Baez (MEX) with 1178, and Francisco Dantas (BRA), shooting 1170. U.S. team members Michael Lukow, Steve Bosson and Russell Wolfe qualified fifth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
On the women's side, strong shooting from Eileen "Lee" Ford kept her in the top spot for much of the first half, but intense winds during the third and fourth 70 meter rounds caused some movement in the women's ranks. For the women's recurve W2/standing group, it was Patricia Layolle (BRA) who qualified first with 1044; she was followed by USA team members Ford, D'Arce Hess, and Natalie Wells with 1039, 1029 and 981 respectively. The team will begin individual elimination round match play today, which will conclude tomorrow with medal matches.
The 2011 Parapan American Games are take place in Guadalajara from November 7-22, with the archery event running through Thursday of this week. The Parapan Am Games, which are being held for the fourth time in 2011, is a multi-sport event for disabled athletes which historically follows the Pan American Games, held every four years.
