WROCLAW, Poland - The headline match of Compound Saturday at the Archery World Cup in Wroclaw saw two of the world's top-three compound men's teams battle for the team gold. USA took a one-point lead in the first set 59-58. Then neither team scored below a 58 for the next two sets as the U.S. men retained their lead.
After 18 arrows, Steve Anderson (Salt Lake City, Utah) had an arrow in the red: "It was going pretty well until I shot that eight.That took the wind out of the sails. The wind changed just a little and I didn't get it right - and it went out into the eight ring."
While Anderson and teammates Braden Gellenthien (Hudson, Massachusetts) and Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) continued to post strong shots, Denmark drilled a perfect 60 finish and took the win 235-232 leaving the U.S. with the silver.
Anderson got his chance for redemption in the individual men's bronze final against 2013 Archery World Cup Final Champion, Denmark's Martin Damsbo. In Anderson's first time on an individual World Cup stage he has been consistent.
After 3 ends, Anderson trailed by two points, but two arrows later, Damsbo failed to get his shot off in time, leaving the win wide open for Anderson.
Crystal Gauvin (Dayville, Connecticut), Lexi Keller (Omro, Wisconsin) and Angela Bradley (Herald, California) shot for team bronze earlier in the morning against the reigning World Archery Champions from Ukraine. The young trio put in an eight an end and a seven in the second. Too many reds, and too many points lost to keep up with the USA, whose arrows were tighter on the target.
"I was a little low coming in, but I adjusted quickly and it was fine," said Gauvin. Bradley actually got stung by a bee just before the match and was in a lot of pain. It did not slow her down. USA finished the match with a solid 3-point lead for the bronze win.
Gauvin had two more matches to go: mixed team and individual bronze matches. The mixed team match with Gellenthien was smooth sailing - the duo took a small lead in the second end and held on to the win straight through the finish.
After that, Gauvin took on personal friend and hugely experienced Linda Ochoa of Mexico. The two shot against each other at the World Archery Championships earlier this month and Gauvin took the win, going all the way to the silver medal. The two were neck and neck through five ends, but this time, Ochoa clinched the victory with her last arrow in the 10.
