LAS VEGAS, Nevada - After four qualifying legs of the 2016-2017 Indoor Archery World Cup season, from Morocco to Thailand, France, and finally Las Vegas, the top 16 archers in each category advanced to the Final this evening. U.S. archers swept the compound men's podium with Jesse Broadwater (Ellenton, Florida) repeating his win from last year taking the gold.
Broadwater, seeded 10th, entered the gold final with his wife in the coach's box and one pink and one blue shoelace on each shoe, representing his son and his daughter. Steve Anderson (Bountiful, Utah) entered with arrows borrowed from the Netherlands' Mike Schloesser. Broadwater opened with a slight lead, up 60-57 after two ends. Anderson caught up over the next few arrows, but Broadwater kept the advantage to win 146-145.
10 U.S. compound men made cut for the Final to fill 16 possible spots. Four head to head matches in first round left six U.S. athletes in the quarterfinals and an all USA semifinal. In the first matchup, Broadwater upset 7th seed Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho). 4th seed Bridger Deaton (Pella, Iowa) and 8th seed Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) were upset in the first round. Paul Tedford (Great Falls, Montana) and David Houser (Creekside, Pennsylvania) were both eliminated in the quarterfinal in USA head to head matches.
Chance Beaubouef (Mount Juliet, Tennessee), who had seeded 3rd, faced No. 9 Kristofer Schaff (Billings, Montana) for the bronze. Beaubouef took the win there 148-146.
Four U.S. compound women made tonight's Final. Cassidy Cox (Albuquerque, New Mexico) ranked 5th, while Christie Colin (York, Pennsylvania), Kali Pavlik (Crofton, Nebraska) and Dahlia Crook (Piedmont, Kansas) made the cut ranking 13, 14 and 16th respectively. Cox advanced through to the semifinals after upsetting Italy's Avdeeva in a shoot off. A narrow 143-142 loss sent Cox to the bronze final where she again was bested 149-143 by Mexico's Linda Ochoa-Anderson.
Khatuna Lorig (Aurora, Colorado) and Brady Ellison (Globe, Arizona) were returning champions from the 2016 season. In 2016, Ellison became the first person to win this event three times, and set a record as the only 4-time World Cup Final winner for the outdoor event counterpart. After setting two world records in just two months this indoor season, including a 599/600 at the third leg of the series in Nimes, France, Ellison was a strong favorite to win this weekend's events.
After seeding first heading into the Final tonight, Ellison faced a tough first match, tying 5-5 to go to a single arrow shoot-off. After advancing to the quarterfinals, Ellison shot four straight sets of perfect 30s to defeat Olympic Champion Ku Bonchan 6-2 and continued the streak with another 12 consecutive arrows in the 10-ring. Korea's Gye matched him arrow for arrow, but continued with another 30 in the final set to take the win over Ellison's 28. In the bronze final, Rio 2016 silver medalist Valladont of France went back and forth with Ellison but ended with a close 6-4 win.
Lorig seeded 16th, just making the cut, but was eliminated 6-0 in the first round. Zach Garrett (Wellington, Missouri) also made the cut to the top 16 for the recurve men, qualifying 9th, but fell in a tough first round matchup with Bonchan.
