Level 1 Instructor Practical Exam
•Instructor Trainer: Coach Ryan C. L4-NTS
•Location: Woodley Park Archery Range
•Format: Extended 2-3 days total of 6-10hrs
[Why multiple days? Because the instructor-trainer takes this certification process very seriously and wants the candidates to truly be properly prepared for the coaching challenges that lay ahead if the candidate pass.]
•All pre-requisites as per USA Archery's policy such as the online course, safesport training, background check, etc. must be completed prior to starting the practical exam.
•Class Size: 1-4 candidates max (waitlist available)
[Why a small group? Why not just take an afternoon and do 10+ candidates at once? Because the instructor trainer wants to give each candidate their due attention and properly prepare them for the challenges they will face if they pass the exam.]
•Fee: $100 per candidate (cash or check only)
[Why is this more expensive than other L1's? Because it will take multiple days and a good amount of time. And unfortunately California gas prices are exorbitant. A good chunk of that fee is going into covering time & driving costs for the instructor-trainer.]
•Equipment:
Candidate must provide their own equipment for themselves and their final exam student.
-stretch band / training band
-shot trainer (optional if available)
-bow (20lbs or less), arrows (3-6), finger tab, armguard, quiver
-whistle
[Why does the candidate need to provide their own equipment? Because do you really want me to buy cheapo, low-quality stuff off Amazon and then charge you with a hidden mark up for it? Likely not. Rather the candidate should provide their own equipment befitting their budget with enough quality, or make arrangements to borrow/rent equipment and bring it to the exam.]
•Schedule: Exact schedule TBA once the instructor-trainer has had a chance to discuss schedule availability with all candidates.
Day 1 Exam (estimate: 3-5hrs)
-Candidate must demonstrate the ability to explain and apply the NTS form and general archery technique as befitting a L1-Instructor
-Candidate must demonstrate sufficient equipment maintenance skills as befitting a L1-Instructor managing equipment at a club level.
Homework:
1) Make a lesson plan for a 1hr private lesson with 1-2 beginner students.
2) Fix and return assigned broken equipment as provided by the instructor trainer to assess craftsmanship and maintenance skills that was learned, during the class session.
Day 2 Exam (estimate 2-5hrs)
-Candidate must demonstrate proper range management, safety, and class organizations skills as they apply their lesson plan to a real student.
This is not a mock-role play with other candidates. All candidates need to bring their own beginner student to run a real 1hr private lesson as their final test.
Skills such as but not limited to: adaptability, communication, organization, integrity, patience, ability to empathize with students, ability to maintain class discipline and keep things on track, proper observance of safety rules and etiquette, etc.
Day 3 Exam: If needed
Final Exam Pass: Only candidates demonstrating coaching abilities befitting a L1 Instructor will pass the exam.
•Disclaimer: This is not a participation award. Merely taking the practical course does not guarantee passing. And there will be no refunds for failing candidates. Furthermore, the candidates agree that the final results as given by the instructor-trainer cannot be disputed. And will not engage in any means that include but are not limited to bypass, bribe, manipulation, or making false claims and accusations to try and force a pass. This course is based on merit and merit alone.
Why? While the instructor-trainer takes no joy in possibly failing a student, nevertheless, the integrity of USA Archery's certification program depends on only candidates that have met the requirements as befitting an L1 instructor being allowed to pass. No exceptions!
Think of this like a driver's license exam. If you pass, you pass. If you fail, then the candidate had to re-sign up and take it over again. (The candidate can choose to do so with a different instructor trainer if they feel there is a conflict of interest.)
By signing up you agree to these terms and conditions.
If there are any questions, please contact the instructor-trainer by email. Thank you
