OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma – The 2020 USA Archery Oklahoma State and JOAD Indoor Championships were held on February 22-23, 2020 in Oklahoma City. Archers from 12 different clubs came from across the state to vie for the title of state champion.
Dylan Hurt (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma), age 13, set a new national record in the Barebow Cub Women’s division. Hurt commented, “It's very big to have an opportunity like this during state championships. In tournaments near my home, I am able to focus on one arrow at a time and not the outcome. That gives me confidence, and that confidence helps me shoot better. When I found out I broke a national record, I was very surprised. I knew I had it in me to shoot my best, and maybe later in life I could achieve big accomplishments. This is big! It feels like a dream.”
The most competitive division at this year’s event was the Master Compound Men’s division (age 50+), which was headlined by a 3-way tie for 3rd place. State champion David Bouska shared, “everyone that stands on the shooting line is as serious as you are about winning.”
Director of Shooting and Oklahoma Storm JOAD Coach Tom Stevenson is excited for the future of archery in Oklahoma: “It’s fantastic to see so much growth among youth archery occurring all across the country, especially in the state of Oklahoma, with USA Archery leading the way.” Coach Stevenson, who earned a spot on the 2020 Masters United States Archery Team, has been integral in growing archery in the United States, particularly in Oklahoma.
