PARIS, France – Day one of the archery competition at the Olympic Games produced a season best score for debutant Catalina GNoriega in qualification, as well as top 10 finishes for Casey Kaufhold and Brady Ellison.
Kaufhold scored 672, which was good enough for fourth in the women’s individual ranking round. GNoriega’s score of 648 was good enough for 38th, while Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez managed 625.
A little later, Ellison stepped up in the men’s individual ranking round and placed seventh with a score of 677. He starts the eliminations rounds against Abdullah Yildirmis of Turkey. They meet next Thursday in the 1/32 round.
Before that, the women’s team of GNoriega, Kaufhold and Mucino-Fernandez face Chinese Taipei on Sunday in the 1/8 round. You can watch the USA in action in the early hours of Sunday morning. The winner will face top seeds Korea in the quarterfinals.
GNoriega will be the first of the four US archers to start the elimination rounds. She faces Germany’s Katharina Bauer, the 27th seed, on Tuesday in the 1/32 round. Kaufhold and Mucino-Fernandez both play their 1/32 matches on Wednesday. Kaufhold, the world number one, meets Fatoumata Sylla of Guinea, with Mucino-Fernandez up against Alejandra Valencia of Mexico, the eighth seed.
USA archers will be in action on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The Friday action involves Kaufhold and Ellison in the mixed team competition. They are third seeds and tackle Uzbekistan in the 1/8 elimination round. The winners will face Japan or Turkey.
