ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New standards were set in New Mexico on Friday as records tumbled in the chase for honors at the 2024 WIAWIS USA Archery JOAD Target Nationals & JOAD U.S. Open.
Qualification for the Target Nationals also determined the medal winners for the U.S. Open and among those securing gold were archers who set 17 new national records, pending verification!
The morning session produced new bests in barebow U15 and U13 women, through Chloe Crandall and Ori Baker, as well as Chase Manor in fixed pins U15 men. Crandall beat the previous record, set in 2019, by 20 points. Manor bettered the previous high by 37 points!
The afternoon’s action provided even more new top scores for Bryce Henak (barebow U18 men), Noah Graham (barebow U13 men), Jack Chen (recurve U15 men) and Anabella Hawkins (fixed pins U15 women).
Baker, Chen, Crandall, Graham, Hawkins and Manor set records across both the single and double rounds.
Ethan Mitchell took gold in the barebow U21 men. His single round score of 626 on the first day of qualification is a new national high.
There were double round records, also, for Jayden Azbill (fixed pins U1 women), Elliana Farquhar (fixed pins U18 women) and Tristan Alvarez (fixed pins U13 men).
One point divided Azbill and second place in fixed pins U21 women. Azbill scored 1232, ahead of Piper Colantone (1231).
Olivia Dean went one better than last year as she claimed gold in the compound U18 women. Jacob McArthur had to settle for silver once again in the compound U18 men, with gold going to defending champion Dewey Hathaway.
On the recurve side, Joshua Baek finished sixth in the U18 men last year but took top honors in U21 men this time around. Jack Krengel, who finished 14th in U21 men in 2023, made significant strides in winning silver 12 months on.
Eunice Choi took gold in the recurve U21 women, and for the second year in a row, Abigail Kippes bagged silver. Chanyoung Mun successfully defended his recurve U18 men’s title, edging Jin Kang by just one point.
Ava Jones, the silver medalist in barebow women at this year’s Indoor Nationals Final, won gold in the barebow U18 women. Just two points separated gold from bronze in the barebow U15 men, with Austin Zenuch (1201) narrowly getting the better of Gabriel Urgelles (1200) and Derek Tang (1199).
Competition continues on Saturday with elimination matches getting underway in the 2024 WIAWIS USA Archery JOAD Target Nationals. The event concludes on Sunday with team rounds.
