Recurve Men Individual
The top 8 athletes from the Recurve Men's ranking round are young and they truly have world class talent!
IM Dong-Hyun (KOR) showed why he will be favourite for a gold medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games as he broke his own 72-arrow world record during the ranking round on the first day of the London Archery Classic at Lord's Cricket Ground.
IM is the Roger FEDERER of archery. At 25 years old, he has won two team Olympic gold medals (2004, 2008), four team world championships gold (2003, 2007, 2009, 2011), one individual world championships gold (2007), two silver (2003, 2009) and the World Cup Final (2008). He is only missing the individual Olympic gold, a medal that has been eluding Korea for ever! He broke the 70-meter round back at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. He established it at 691 points at the Shanghai World Cup Stage last year (under heavy rain) and now, at the end of a long season, he put it at 693 points!
Khairul Anuar MOHAMAD (MAS) is a young upcoming athlete at 20 years old. He burst onto the front scene last month when he took the 2nd place at the Shanghai World Cup Stage. ELLISON has won pretty much everything in the last two years to climb onto the No. 1 spot in the World Ranking. He is the two times World Cup Final defender (from the 2010 Edinburgh Final and last week in Istanbul). He earned the individual bronze medal at the Turin World Championships in July. They both scored 677 points.
GIROUILLE achieved 676 points. He is the 2006 youth world champion and the 2008 European champion. With the French team, he won the silver medal at the last two world championships. At 19 years old, KIM had 675 points and is none the less than the individual and team world champion from Turin. He is also the double winner (individual and team) at the Asian Games last year, where he broke the FITA Round world record (144 arrows).
SERRANO scored 671 points. Back at the Beijing 2008 Games, he was the No. 1 qualifier at the Ranking Round and finished 4th. At 21 years old DAI was 2nd at the World Cup Final last week. He scored 670 points in the ranking round; the same as OH. The latter was in the Korean gold medal team at the Ulsan World Championships and the Turin World Championships. He also won the individual silver in Italy.
The youngest competitor, 17-year-old Gael PREVOST (FRA) scored 664 to finish 12th. The 2008 Olympic champion Viktor RUBAN (UKR) was 14th and the 2004 champion Marco GALIAZZO (ITA), 22nd.
Recurve Men Team
In the team qualifications (the total points from the three archers in the team), Korea was 1st with 2038 points, France was 2nd with 1999, the same amount of points than Mexico. The USA was 4th and Ukraine, 5th. Belarus took the last qualifying spot (16th) with 1911 points.
Recurve Women Individual
On Monday afternoon, the women's ranking round saw JUNG Dasomi (KOR) win with a score of 666 in conditions far more gusty and unpredictable than the men's event earlier in the day. The 21-year-old athlete was 17 points clear from the rest of the competitors! There was again a lot of youth talent on the women's side.
Ren HAYAKAWA (JPN) was 2nd on 649 while her sister Nami HAYAKAWA (JPN) was 13th with 633.
The winner of the Ranking Round at the Beijing Test Event in 2007, Justyna MOSPINEK (POL), got her best result of the year with 3rd place (648 points). MOSPINEK won the World Cup Final in 2008.
LE Chieh-Ying (TPE), 21 y. o., was 4th with 647. KI Bo Bae (KOR) took 5th place with 646. Carrie WEGH (NED), 20 y.o., had 645; M. B. JAGER (DEN), 20 y.o., and HAN Gyeonghee (KOR), 19 y.o., scored 642.
Recurve Women Team
The women's team event is shaping up to be a competitive affair with Korea (1954 points), Chinese Taipei (1903) and China (1890) filling the top three slots. Team USA qualified eighth.
On Tuesday the men's team event takes center stage, beginning with the 1/16 elimination matches and culminating in the gold medal match.
