WROCLAW, Poland - The compound target archery competition concluded today at the World Games with USA archers in the mixed team and women's individual finals.
Kris Schaff (Billings, Montana) and Cassidy Cox (Albuquerque, New Mexico), both making their World Games debuts this weekend, qualified 4th in the mixed team competition. With two perfect 40s in the quarterfinal yesterday, they took a solid win to advance to today's semifinals.
After falling to top seed and eventual gold medalist team, Denmark, in the semifinals, Cox and Schaff faced a strong duo from Colombia featuring Sara Lopez. The U.S. team swung the match in their favor with a two-point lead in the third end after an initial small deficit. Then, with another perfect 40 in the last three arrows, they clinched the win and the bronze.
On her way to the compound women's individual finals, 15th seed Christie Colin (York, Pennsylvania) upset No. 2 ranked Sarah Sonnichsen of Denmark 145-144 in the 1/8 round, before facing teammate Cox in the quarterfinals. Cox had the lead for the first half, but in a strong comeback, Colin took the win.
Slovenia's Toja Ellison took a solid win 140-135 over Colin in the semifinals as Colin advanced to the bronze final. Shooting with Russia's Alexandra Savenkova, Colin took an early lead but eventually ended in a tie 137-137. In the shoot off, Colin loosed a strong 10 to Savenkova's 9 to earn the win and spot on the podium.
This brought USA's World Games medal count to four as John Demmer III and Brady Ellison had both earned individual silver medals in the barebow and recurve field archery events.
