USA Finishes on Top at Para World Ranking Event

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Competition wrapped today at the 2018 Para World Ranking Event with head to head elimination matches.

With 23 competitors, the compound open men's division was the largest and most competitive. Sam Boyles, seeded 19th, went on an incredible upset streak, knocking out No. 14 Mathew Beller 138-133 in the 1/16th, 3rd seed Ben Thompson 141-140 in the 1/8th, and Canada's Rhys in the quarterfinals 141-136. It was not until Boyles met 2nd seed, Matt Stutzman in the semifinals that he fell 135-148, as Stutzman continued picking up steam with high-scoring match wins.

Top seed and Paralympic Champion Andre Shelby went out in a close quarterfinal upset 147-146 to No. 8, Lance Thornton. Thornton then outscored 4th seed Eric Burkett 142-139 in the semifinals to face Stutzman for gold. Stutzman was untouchable with an impressive 148 to Thornton's 142 to clinch the win. Meanwhile, Boyles and Burkett went head to head for bronze with Burkett taking a narrow win 139-138.

The recurve open men's bracket saw only one upset - in the gold final. Top seed Kevin Mather made a solid run, taking a 6-0 shut out in the quarterfinals and a 6-2 win over 4th seed Michael Lukow to shoot for gold against No. 2, Eric Bennett. Bennett beat out 3rd seed Timothy Palumbo on a semifinal shoot off and then outscored Mather in a short 7-1 match. Palumbo and Lukow shot for bronze where Palumbo took the win 7-3.

W1 Lia Coryell upset 2nd seed, Brazil's Luiz Jaime Gomes Perilo 131-125 in the semifinals to finish with silver in a 128-122 match with Brazil's Santana Franco. USA's Jerry Shields faced Luiz Jaime Gomes Perilo for bronze and just missed the podium in a 124-121 decision.

Teresa Wallace qualified 3rd for the compound open women, and was the only U.S. archer to make the podium, winning bronze in a 139-137 upset of top seed Alim of Singapore.

Lori Dupree finished with recurve open women's silver in a 6-0 matchup with Brazil's Dergovics.
