Chula Vista, CA - Fans watching the action from the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Archery are being treated to a very exciting event as the competition heats up. Shadow team members are vying for the eight berths per gender that are up for grabs tomorrow, which will guarantee archers' entries to the third and final Olympic Trials event.
Today's event closed with an extremely tight race on the men's side. As of tonight's unofficial results, Brady Ellison (AZ) holds a solid nine-point lead in first with 51 total points, and Jake Kaminski (CA) is in second by five and one quarter points with 42. They are followed by Butch Johnson (CT), pulling up from fifth to third with 36.75; Jacob Wukie (OH) up to fourth with 36.5 and Joe Fanchin (CA) dropping from third to fifth with 36.25 in this very close competition.
Holding sixth by six points is Thomas Stanwood (MA) with 30.25; he's followed closely by Victor Wunderle (NC) with 29.75 and Dan Schuller (PA), at 26.75. Rounding out positions nine through sixteen are Staten Holmes (TX) with 21.5, Peter Kelchner (NM) with 19, Daniel McLaughlin (OH) and John Magera (TX), both with 17.75, Michael Quayle (SC) with 15.25, Joe McGlyn (NY) and Jeff Anderson (WA) with 14.5, and Matthew Zumbo (CA) at 13.5 points.
Miranda Leek (IA) managed to hold on to the first place lead she established yesterday on the women's side, finishing today with 48.75 total points. Just three quarters of a point behind is Jennifer Nichols (WY) with 48, and Khatuna Lorig (CA), shooting well enough to pull up from fourth to third with 40.5. Kristin Braun (CA) is just four and a half points out of the top three with 35; she is followed very closely by teammate Heather Koehl (WI) at 34.75 points.
Lori Cieslinski (MI) ended her day with 29 points; Mackenzie Brown (TX) is in the seventh position with 27.5. Stephanie Miller (IL) follows with 22.25, followed by Holly Stover (MI) with 22 points, Lauren Clamon with 19.5 and Mary Hamm with 17.75. In the twelfth spot is Erin Mickelberry (WA) with 17.25, Ariel Gibilaro (CT), up two spots to thirteenth with 15.50, Nicole Rasor (AZ), up one position with 13.50, Madison Eich (WA) with 13.25, and Sarah Chai (NY) with 8.5.
Just four matches remain in the round robins tomorrow, after which the top eight archers per category will be announced. The action intensifies on Friday and Saturday, with an elimination round and another set of round robins in which bonus points double for match wins and three arrow average scores.
