FITA to Use Set System for 2010 Recurve and Compound Events Starting April 1

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - FITA announced Tuesday that it will use a set system for all eliminations and finals in recurve and compound competitions starting April 1, 2010, which will include all World Cup events, Grand Prix, European Championships, University Championships and other major events. The 2010 events will use a 70m qualification round followed by match play using sets at 70m for both divisions.

For the 2010 Archery World Cup stages, FITA will use the 50m finals with hit and miss in the televised events for individuals. Depending upon TV scheduling, teams will compete under the same format. The 2010 World Cup Final in Edinburgh, Scotland will have 50m hit and miss system for compound archers and a 70m for recurve.

Starting April 1, 2011, FITA will introduce the 50m compound round for qualifications, eliminations and finals. At the 2011 World Championships the compound division will shoot a 50m qualification round while recurve archers will shoot the four-distance FITA round.

"The USA Archery Board of Directors will be reviewing the new format at their November meeting and will determine whether we will adopt the new rules for national events in 2010," said Denise Parker, USA Archery CEO. "We definitely don't want to fall behind the other countries in preparing our athletes for international competition. But with so little information about this rounds future, we also don't want to jump in too soon and create issues for all our organizers and athletes that may all be for nothing if FITA Council does not end up adopting the changes permanently. It is important that we take the time to plan and think about both scenarios."

USA Archery will post the Board of Directors' decision upon the conclusion of the November meeting. The FITA Set System Description is below.

 

FITA Set System Summary

Set System valid as of April 1, 2010 for all Outdoor Competitions

7.6.5 Set system

7.6.5.1 The winner of a set is the archer which has the highest score of the arrows shot for that set. The winner of the set gets two(2) points, If the score is tied both will receive one (1) point.

7.6.5.2 For events depending on the number of arrows per set, there is a maximum number

of sets:

• Six (6) arrows/set -> best of three (3) sets. After a minimum of two (2) sets, the athlete with the highest points is declared the winner of the match, when his opponent can no longer tie with the remaining points. If the tie persists after the third (3rd) set, a single arrow shoot off will be shot and the athlete with the arrow closest to the centre will win.
• Three (3) arrows/set -> best of five (5) sets: After a minimum of three (3) sets, the athlete with the highest points is declared the winner of the match when his opponent can no longer tie with the remaining points If the points are tied after four (4) sets a fifth (5th) set will be shot. If the tie persists after the fifth (5th) set, a single arrow shoot off will be shot and the athlete with the arrow closest to the centre will win.

It is intended that for 1/64, 1/32, 1/16, 1/8 there will be 6 arrow sets. From the 1/4 finals there will be 3 arrow sets. For Olympics it will be always 3 arrow sets.

For the best of three sets you can have the following scenarios (in bold when the match is finished)

• After 1st set:  2-0; 0- 2; 1-1
• After 2nd set:  4-0; 2-2; 3-1; 1-3; 0-4
• After 3rd set:  4-2; 2-4; 5-1; 4-2; 2-4; 1-5; 3-3-> Tie Break

Compound Round

This motion will come into effect on 1 April 2011 to give teams enough time to prepare for it. It will be shot during the medal events of the 2010 World Cup to familiarise all teams with the event. This also gives enough lead in time for the target manufacturers.

4.5.1.5 The Compound Round which consist of:

• The Compound 50m Qualification Round consisting of 72 arrows on the 80cm target face.
• The Compound Eliminations Round in which the top one-hundred four (104) athletes (mandatory for World Championships) are seeded according to their positions in the 50m Qualification Round (see Match play Chart Appendix 10 and Book 2; Appendix 1.1). They shoot a series of matches in groups, each match consisting of four (4) sets of three (3) arrows.
• The Finals Round, in which the top eight (8) athletes remaining from the Elimination Round shoot individual matches, each match consisting of four (4) sets of three (3) arrows culminating in the medal matches with six (6) sets of 3 arrows . The athletes will alternate shooting one (1) arrow at a time.
• The Team Elimination Round, in which the top sixteen (16) teams of three (3) athletes seeded according to their positions as determined by their total score in the Qualification Round (see Match play Chart Appendix 10 and Book 2; Appendix 1 to 3), shoot simultaneously a series of matches, each match consisting of four (4) sets of three (3) arrows (1 per athlete).
• The Team Finals Round, in which the top four (4) teams of athletes remaining from the Elimination Round shoot a series of individual matches, each match consisting of four (4) sets of three (3) arrows (1 per athlete) culminating in the Medal matches with six (6) sets of 3 arrows . The teams shoot alternately in three arrow segments. The timing is started and stopped when the athlete crosses the 1-meter line.
• The Compound Elimination and Finals round are shot at 50 meters on hit/miss target face.

The size of the hit/miss zone is 10cm.

 

Further bylaws to implement this motion will be accepted at the FITA Council meeting in November 2009.
