Ellison to Shoot for Pan Ams Medal

Brady Ellison (Glendale, AZ) became the second U.S. archer to score a spot in the individual finals at the Pan Am Games, showing the kind of mettle that makes him the number one ranked archer in the world. Ellison shot his way through three decisive victories today, giving up just one set point in three matches.

Ellison, the 22-year-old archery superstar, opened with a successful 1/16 match versus Diego Ramos of Ecuador, with a 7-1 win.  In the 1/8, Ellison faced El Salvador's Oscar Ticas, claiming a three-set 6-0 victory. Advancing to the quarterfinals, Ellison was unstoppable in his match with Elias Malave of Venezuela, shooting his second shutout of the day and clinching his spot in the semifinals with a 6-0 win.

Other U.S. archers had mixed results today. Jake Kaminski (Elma, NY), currently the second ranked archer in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Archery, found success in his first two matches, edging Fabio Emilio of Brazil in the 1/16 and Canada's Jay Lyon in the 1/8. Canadian teammate Crispin Duenas, however, proved too strong for Kaminski in the quarterfinals, stopping him with a 6-0 decision. Team USA's Joe Fanchin (Oceanside, CA), seeded fifth and widely considered a strong contender for the finals, suffered a surprising loss in the 1/16 to David Vilchez of Venezuela, the 28th-ranked archer in this competition.

According to team staff, the U.S. archers headed to the practice field immediately following individual competition, in preparation for team eliminations on Friday, in which the first archery medals will be awarded. Ellison noted: "I'm shooting good, the weather is great, and I'm peaking perfectly for the finals here. I'm looking forward to my semifinal match with [Mexico's] Juan Rene Serrano, the crowd should get loud and I like that a lot."
