PHOENIX, Ariz. - It took an extra arrow in the 70-meter ranking round to wrap-up day one of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Archery today at the Ben Avery Shooting Center in Phoenix, Ariz. Jacob Wukie (Oak Harbor, Ohio/Chula Vista, Calif.) forced leader Brady Ellison (Glendale, Ariz./Chula Vista, Calif.) into a one-arrow shoot off, which Ellison won to remain the leader. Wukie made the biggest move of the day though moving from seventh position into fourth in the overall standings with two days to go to make the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team. Olympic veterans Butch Johnson (Woodstock, Conn./1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004) and Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill./2000 and 2004) sit in second and third place respectively.

"I was happy with how the day went," said Wukie, "The wind was really tricky. I had a lot of places where I could have gained some points, but everybody did. Overall I was pleased with it. I had a lot of control over my shot and putting it (the arrow) in the middle. I was really pleased it. It definitely builds a lot of confidence. I've made a lot of changes and am constantly making changes. Having a good day, especially on some of the things that I struggle with helps me going forward."

The women's standings remained unchanged following today's 144 arrow event. Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo./2004 U.S. Olympian) remains in first place with two days remaining in the trials. She is followed by two-time Olympian (1996 Russia and 2000 Georgia) Khatuna Lorig (Chula Vista, Calif.), 2000 U.S. Olympian Karen Scavotto (Chula Vista, Calif.)

The top eight men and the top eight women are competing in this final round of what has been an eight month U.S. Olympic Team Selection process. Athlete ranking to start today was determined by standing following the first two rounds of the process which began in September 2007 and continued the first week of April at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. The scores from those two events combined with scores from this weekend's event will be tabulated in a formula to determined the top three men and top two women that will make up the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team which will be announced Sunday, May 4.

Single-elimination match play will take place tomorrow, Saturday, May 3 beginning with the women at 8:30 a.m. for practice and 9:00 a.m. for matches. The men will start with a practice at 1:30 p.m. and match at 2:00 p.m. Round-robin competition will take place on Sunday. Scores will be tabulated and team selection announced on Sunday. Team announcement and press conference is tentatively set for 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 4.

The public is invited to visit the Ben Avery Shooting Facility FITA range to watch the event. Spectators are advised to bring their optics and to check-in at the information booth for an event program. Souvenir team photos will be available for children.

This USA Archery event is hosted by the Arizona Game and Fish Department and Arizona State Archery Association.

The Ben Avery Shooting Facility is located at the northwest corner of I-17 and Carefree Highway. To get to the FITA archery range, take I-17 to the Carefree Highway exit (Exit 223) and go 1.5 miles west on Carefree Highway to the stoplight at the Arizona Game and Fish Department's headquarters building. Turn right and follow the signs to the archery event.
