WROCLAW, Poland - After overcoming a 6th place seed yesterday to earn a place in the semifinals by eliminating World Archery's "one to beat," John Demmer III took silver today in his World Games debut.
Reigning World Archery Field Championships team gold medalist Demmer faced Italy's Giuseppe Seimandi, who has won gold at the last two editions of the World Games, in 2009 and 2013, in yesterday's final match. Taking an early lead and holding strong Demmer earned himself a spot in the semifinals.
Against No. 2 ranked Martin Ottosson of Sweden, Demmer opened the match with a deficit of six points by the third target. Then the tides turned in his favor. As Ottosson managed all 4s on the third target, Demmer picked up a few points, and in the final three arrows, Ottosson struggled and allowed Demmer to gain an additional 10-points towards his lead to swing the win 52-45.
In the gold final with Istvan Kakas, an experienced field archer from Hungary who has been on the scene for almost two decades, Demmer was down 3 points after the first three arrows, but came back for a tied score after the second target. Demmer and Kakas matched arrow for arrow on the next target, but Kakas took the win on the final target to clinch the gold.
