RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Lia Coryell (LaCrosse, Wisconsin) and Jeff Fabry (Leemore, California) made history today as the first U.S. W1 mixed team to compete in the Paralympic Games after Lia became the first U.S. woman to compete in the W1 individual Paralympic archery event in eliminations this morning.
Individually, Coryell earned a spot in the quarterfinals, qualifying with a personal best score. She fell to eventual silver medalist, Great Britain's Jo Frith. Great Britain swept the event podium cleaning all three medals.
Fabry commented on social media after her match: "Lia shot a solid match against Great Britain in the W1 Womens Quarterfinals. Great Britain ended up on top. Lia shot great at her first Paralympics! Now on to W1 mixed teams!"
The third seeded team of Fabry and Coryell opened with a strong 128-113 win in their quarterfinal match against Spain. Keeping consistent scores throughout the semifinal, the duo scored a 125 to Korea's 137 to advance to the bronze final.
Facing individual W1 men's champion David Drahoninsky and his partner Sarka Musilova of the Czech Republic, USA had an early two point lead. After the second end, the Czech team was up with the two-point lead. In the third end, the U.S. regained one point, but suffered a seven point deficit in the final four arrows, leaving the Czech team with the win.
This concludes the archery competition for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Team USA returns home with a gold medal for Andre Shelby's individual compound open men's podium topping finish. Complete results from the event are available at www.worldarchery.org.
