WUXI, China - The World Archery Youth Championships is the most highly anticipated youth event in archery and the greatest showcase of up and coming talents. Today, the US cadet compound women made a splash during qualifications.
Sonia Taniguchi (Chula Vista, Calif.) led the group, finishing third. Danielle Reynolds (Gilbert, Ariz.) had a strong performance to qualify fifth and defending champion Emily Fischer (Corpus Christi, Tex.) ranked 11th. The trio qualified first and each is poised well heading into eliminations.
The cadet recurve women also had solid performances to qualify fifth as a team. The three ladies, Anna Marie Miscione (Ramona, Calif.), Lauren Clamon (Chula Vista, Calif.), and Eliana Claps (Everett, Wash.) shot scores within four points of each other to finish 20th, 22nd, and 23rd.
The cadet compound men are set up for medal rounds with Chris Bee (Hartland, Mich.) who shined in qualifications, solidly locking the No. 3 seed. Tyson Walker Pruitte (Hamlet, N.C.) battled through close scores to rank 19th and Justin Dixon (Yoakum, Tex.) finished 30th.
The cadet recurve men will face some tough matches in the next few days; Collin Klimitchek (Chula Vista, Calif.) performed the best of the US team in a tight and full division, qualifying 25th. Teammates Geun Woo Kim (Valencia, Calif.) and Andrew Paul Mateo (Chandler, Ariz.) ranked 60th and 66th respectively. The boys ranked 13th as a team.
Competition resumes tomorrow with early individual eliminations mixed team eliminations through the semifinals. Klimitchek and Miscione are seeded 12th going into the recurve mixed team round while Taniguchi and Bee are poised to survive the day, going in qualified 4th.
China, Korea and France have emerged as big players to watch out for in upcoming recurve matches, while the US, Mexico, Russia and Great Britain have been heavy hitters on the compound side. Team USA performed well in qualifications and promise exciting matches, likely vying for several medals and titles in the next few days.
